Pediatric Constipation: Evidence-Based Naturopathic and Integrative Approaches to Treating Constipation in Children

Learning Objectives: 1. Define the criteria for functional constipation in children and infants. 2. Identify and rule out organic (non-functional) causes of constipation; choose appropriate imaging and laboratory studies to confirm the diagnosis. 3. Identify common medical conditions which are frequently associated with or exacerbated by constipation. 4. Be able to implement various naturopathic strategies, utilizing the therapeutic order and up-to-date evidence to effectively treat and prevent constipation. This includes the following: a. Dietary fiber, including supplemental dietary fiber b. Prokinetics, including probiotics, botanical medicine, acupuncture c. Physical medicine: physical movement, stool position, abdominal massage d. Bowel retraining e. Laxative therapy: naturopathic and conventional medicine laxatives (see below) f. Fecal disimpaction 5. Be able to counsel patients on the safety and evidence behind the following laxatives: a. Polyethylene glycol (Miralax) b. Milk of Magnesia c. Magnesium citrate d. Senna e. Sorbitol f. Lactulose g. Mineral Oil
